Q: Are there any insect control measures in Japan, where humidity is high?
The materials we use can be damaged by moisture and termites.
In Japan, what has been done about this?
We use unripe persimmon fruits. When fermented and applied to the surface of the material, it can be expected to be effective as a preservative.
Furthermore, the Red soil (red iron oxide pigment), called Benigara, is used. When this is applied to the surface of the material, it is protected from moisture and termites.
In reality, it ’s becoming less and less common to expose the timber structure.
More chemical-based coatings are applied on the post to prevent it from rotting.
The material gets rotten so it needs to be protected.

We, Suikoushya, plan to establish a school building in Ile de France in 2022.

This is a project that we want to build with Suikoushya graduates and professional woodworkers. Through this real construction project, Takami would like to pass not only Japanese woodworking techniqs and craftsmanship but also the spirit of the Japanese people involved in making things.
