Although Kyoto is perhaps best known for its temples and shrines, there are many other types of wooden buildings of note in the city that are worth visiting.

While the classical Japanese performance art of Noh (能) are often performed in dedicated Noh theatres indoors these days, they are a number of permanent outdoor Noah stages (能舞台) in and around Kyoto that one can visit, such as the Gosha Shrine (五社神社) in the western part of the city, characterized by its large thatch roof over the main stage. Most of the original Noh stages are relatively simple structures, its form informed by its function of hosting a Noh play (as well as the kyogen (狂言) acts in between) with good natural lighting and sound.
