FAQ:Need double the amount of 1000 grit whetstones than 8000 grit?
Whetstones are used to adjust blades, and the 1000-grit whetstone is generally used to make the shape of the blade.
It takes a lot of time to make the shape of the blade, so the 1000-grit whetstone is used more.
After the blade is shaped, then the 8000-grit finishing whetstone is used to make the blade sharp so it can cut well.
The 1000-grit whetstone is used more to create the shape of the blade,
and also being the softer whetstone, is ground through more quickly.
You could say that by the time you grind through an 8000-grit whetstone, you would have ground through two or three 1000-grit whetstones.
