Today, I wanted to talk about the angles and the balance of dimensioning of a Ari Shiguchi joinery.
Although there’s not a specific set of fixed numbers when making this joinery…
To a certain extent, everyone in Japan uses the same way in calculating the size and dimension…
and today I think it would be good to show everyone a standard way, from my experience, of calculating the dimension of the Ari Shiguchi joinery.
Firstly, let’s take a look at the angle of the ari (dovetail).
There is an interesting way of calculating the angle of this material.
Generally speaking, for the width of the neck of the dovetail is approximately one third to one quarter of the width of the male part of the joint material.
For example, well, if the width of the male part of the joinery is at say 100mm, or 105mm, then the width of the neck of the dovetail would be around 30mm or so.
So why the 30mm here and what does it mean?
Do you know?

We, Suikoushya, plan to establish a school building in Ile de France in 2022.

This is a project that we want to build with Suikoushya graduates and professional woodworkers. Through this real construction project, Takami would like to pass not only Japanese woodworking techniqs and craftsmanship but also the spirit of the Japanese people involved in making things.
