Rengeo-in (蓮華王院) is yet another temple in Kyoto that was constructed in the Japanese Style Architecture(和様). Rengeo-in, otherwise known as Sanjusangen-do (三十三間堂), is over 900 years old, having survived numerous earthquakes, and houses 1001 Buddhist Kannon statues.

Rengeo-in is an exceptional building. The building form is strikingly linear, spanning over 120mm in length, a scale that’s unlike any other temple structures in Kyoto. It is one of the few fine examples of temples that were built in the Japanese style. Among the many typical elements of that style, one will notices the similarity between the design of the bracket arm system (組物) above the columns in support of the roof, as well as the secondary supporting struts (間斗束) between each brackets, in Rengeo-in and the in Daihoon-ji (大報恩寺).
