We want to introduce you to the Okochi Sanso Garden (大河内山荘庭園) near Suikoushya’s Kyoto workshop in the Arashiyama neighbourhood. It was the former home of period film actor Okochi Sanso (1898-1962). Aside from the main villa, there is a Japanese tea house, a Buddhist hall, and an open-air museum, all located inside this giant 20,000 m² landscape garden. There are also several lookout point that offer some of the best views over Kyoto.
Like many of the Japanese gardens in Kyoto, the Okochi Sanso Garden was designed for all seasons, and the scenery changes drastically depending on the time of the year. There are buildings of old and new. Deep in the garden, there is a rustic, soan-style tea house called Tansui-an (滴水庵). It was built in the Meiji Period before the actor had it moved to the current location.
While you are in the area, don’t miss the infamous bamboo grove near the entrance of the complex!

Even though Suikoushya International Craft School is now up and running in France, our Kyoto workshop will still continue to operate and we want to welcome you when you’re in Kyoto!

Here in Kyoto you can explore the many different wooden architectural treasures of Japan!
